So, like many people, I have tons of pinterest boards……filled with wondrous ideas and crafts……that I never….find time…to do….EVER. Today, I changed that. I decided to put a Christmas tree in my kitchen this year. Since I tend to do themed trees, it just made sense to do a food/cooking themed tree in that space.
On a whim this afternoon, I made a couple of batches of salt dough and pulled out my cookie cutters. My husband and I then sat at the table filling cookie sheets with salt dough ornaments. One of the many things I found on pinterest this month, was a garland made from gingerbread. Although, I did not have the desire to make gingerbread, I improvised and used salt dough made with wheat flour and added cinnamon for a nice scent. This is the finished product.
For anybody interested in this project, here is what you will need:
2 cups of wheat flour
1/2 cup of salt
1/8 cup of cinnamon
3/4 – 1 cup of water
twine or ribbon
toothpick or skewer
mix all dry ingredients together well….it is best to use a mixer with a dough hook…….then start adding the water a bit at a time until you have a firm dough.
Wheat flour tends to be thinner than regular, all-purpose flour. Your dough may be a little sticky because of this, so you will need some extra flour to knead and roll your dough.
Make sure you also flour your rolling pin and roll the dough to approx. 1/8″ thick.
I used a small 3″ gingerbread man cookie cutter. This dough made about 68 men…..enough for 2 6 ft garlands.
I placed them about an inch apart on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
Once on the sheet, poke 2 holes side by side where his waist would be.
Bake in a 400° oven for approx. 20-30 minutes
Once cool, weave the ribbon through the holes and hang (I used cotton cooking string to keep with my kitchen theme).
